The American Family

They say, “The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.” It was in the 90s that I first heard the term “cradle to grave.” I also heard the phrase “rewriting history.”

Now I hear that a publisher is selling the text of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence with a warning label.

Where are we headed? And why are we headed there?

Although I am not entirely sure where the phrase first started, evidently there was a poem called, “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle Rules the World.” It was written about mothers. More recently, I have heard it said about government.

Think about where most of today’s kids spend their time. I am not being critical, with this next statement, but I do want to make a point. Often from the time a child is born, someone other than their mom or dad is taking care of them most of their waking hours.

America’s children are spending long days in day care, pre-school, school, and after-school programs. They are being exposed all day to thinking that is not mom or dad’s. In the evening, sometimes it is off to ballgames and other activities. The bulk of their time is spent away from the family unit.

Although it may not be financially feasible for that to change, it does make it really challenging for parents to know what their children are being taught. Evidently, judging by the outcry, many things that are important in history were in the past removed from the children’s textbooks.

What difference does all this make any way?

Mark 13 speaks of the end times. One thing we know that will happen then – and we see a hint of that today – is that the family unit will completely breakdown.

Now the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son; and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death. And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
Mark 13:12-13

Our children will grow up to think like whomever is raising them.

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Proverbs 22:6

As parents, if we want our children to know Jesus, we must teach them that Jesus paid our sin debt.

If we want them to know what God did for America, we must teach them that America was founded on Judeo-Christian beliefs. Our Founding Fathers believed that God was at work on their side through the struggle for American Independence.

If we want them to know right from wrong, we must teach them that too.

Think about it. Who is training up the children in your life? What are they training them up to become?

LIFE APPLICATION

Key Focal Verse:

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Romans 5:1-2

Today’s challenge is to continue to pray for revival. Pray for our leaders. Pray for our country. If you have children in your life, teach them to love the Lord, and teach them to love America. Share our heritage with them.
