Verbal Eloquence Does Not Matter When Witnessing

Confused about what to say to bring someone to the Lord? Perhaps you don’t want to hurt their feelings. No one ever got saved by being presented with a lie. Telling them they are good or telling them that their sins are not really sins does not help them.

No one ever came to the Lord when they felt they could handle things on their own and that they don’t need God.

As much as we like to think that our leading folks to the Father depends on our eloquent words or on our great oratory skill, it really doesn’t.

If you are trying to win folks, and not seeing results, remember that ultimately it is the power of the Holy Spirit that is the factor. Give a clear presentation of the Gospel, and let God do the rest.

We have multiple examples from history where we see clearly the power of God at work. We know that it was not the ability of the speakers. Consider Jonah and Jonathan Edwards.

Although it took an excursion in the belly of a big fish to persuade Jonah to go, Jonah went to Nineveh to give them a message from God.

And Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
Jonah 3:4

Revival came to Nineveh that day.

Now consider Jonathan Edwards. He delivered a sermon in Enfield, Connecticut in July 1741 called “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” It is my understanding that Edwards’ delivery style was to simply read what he had written. Here’s a part of it.

There is no want of power in God to cast wicked men into hell at any moment. Men’s hands cannot be strong when God rises up. The strongest have no power to resist him, nor can any deliver out of his hands. — He is not only able to cast wicked men into hell, but he can most easily do it. Sometimes an earthly prince meets with a great deal of difficulty to subdue a rebel, who has found means to fortify himself, and has made himself strong by the numbers of his followers. But it is not so with God.

Revival came to Enfield, Connecticut that day.

Our abilities and us never bring folks to the Lord. It’s always the power of the Holy Spirit working through us. God does the drawing.

And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.
John 6:65

God doesn’t need a great orator to bring about revival. He uses folks willing to be used and willing to speak the truth even in the face of great opposition. Ultimately, it is never us. The Father does the drawing.

LIFE APPLICATION

Key Focal Verse:

Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
2 John 1:3

Today’s challenge is to be bold for God. God uses folks who will speak the truth and call a sin a sin. You don’t have to be eloquent. You just need to be able to give a clear presentation of the Gospel. Remember, no one ever comes to the Father unless the Father does the drawing.
