How Reliable is the Bible?

As archeologists uncover artifacts, the Bible is constantly being proven as an accurate history book. A closer look would reveal that it is the genealogy of Jesus Christ, and the time line going back to Adam.

How reliable do you believe the Bible to be?

Let’s look at some of the ways the books of the Bible support or reference each other.

Let’s start with validity of the Old Testament. It always pointed to Jesus. In the New Testament, Jesus says that He is the fulfillment of those pointers.

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
Matthew 5:17

Jesus also quoted and reference many Old Testament scriptures including: Micah, Malachi, and Deuteronomy.

If we acknowledge Jesus as God, then we must believe that because God cannot lie that the Old Testament is true.

What about the New Testament? Are there any pointers from the New Testament to the Old other than Jesus saying He fulfilled them? (And Jesus fulfilling them really should be enough.)

Adam was the first man. God created him at least 4000 years before Jesus was born – maybe longer. At least 5 books of the New Testament mention Adam by name: Luke, Romans, 1 Corinthians, 1 Timothy, & Jude.

Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.
Luke 3:38

What about the validity of scripture in general? Paul wrote:

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
2 Timothy 3:16-17

It is interesting to look at the connection between Old and New Testaments, but it all comes down to faith. If you believe as I do that the Bible is the Word of God, and God cannot lie, then we must accept the Bible as true.

It is also interesting to note that the Dead Sea Scrolls were found between 1947 and 1956. Most of these Hebrew and Aramaic manuscripts date back to between 200 BC and 66 AD. Among the manuscripts were 2 copies almost completely intact of Isaiah, and fragments from all other books of the Old Testament except Esther. What an awesome validation of the accuracies after all these years of the Old Testament texts that we have grown to know and love!

If you do not believe the entire Word of God to be true and accurate, what part would you throw out? How would you know that you got it right?

LIFE APPLICATION

Key Focal Verse:

But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
1 Corinthians 2:9-10

Today’s challenge is to think about how accurate you consider the Bible to be. Do you really believe that it is the Word of God? Do you view it as a letter from God to you? If so, are you really using it to help you in your life?
