Jesus is God, Eternal, & Without Beginning

When I was about 5, I asked my mother who made God. She told me that no one had made Him, and that He had always been.

Some folks think Jesus had a beginning or that He was just a prophet. Have you ever stopped to think about when Jesus began? Do you think He was just a prophet?

What you believe about Jesus is at the heart of the Christian faith. Consider the following verses:

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Genesis 1:26-27

“We” and “our” refer to the Trinity. Now, you may say that the word Trinity is not in the Bible. True, but the description is. Consider the following:

And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
Matthew 3:16-17

Here you have God the Father in a voice from heaven. Jesus, God the Son, is in the water. The Spirit of God is descending like a dove. All of the Trinity is present at one time.

What about Jesus? Is Jesus really God or did Jesus become God at that moment or another moment? If Genesis did not make it clear, we need only to look to John for clarification.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:1

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
John 1:14

Has Jesus always been? Is He eternal? John said He was with God and was God in the beginning. What else do we know?

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
Revelation 1:8

Jesus said He is Alpha and Omega. The first and the last. God has also said He is the first and the last.

Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last.
Isaiah 48:12

Hence, Jesus is God. He is eternal, and without beginning.

LIFE APPLICATION

Today’s challenge is to examine what you believe about Jesus. As I once heard it accurately pointed out, it’s not Christianity if it is mixed with another religion. If you believe Jesus is not God, then you change what the cross means. If you believe He was God in the flesh, then you must believe that He could take the punishment for all your sins and beat death. I hope that is what you choose to believe, that you will repent, invite Jesus into your heart, and make Him Lord of your life before it’s eternally too late.
