When the church has a get together, I try to avoid the kitchen. I typically bring things that will be fine heated in a crock-pot, or served cold. It’s not that I am lazy, or that I don’t want to be helpful. I just was not called to serve in that way. When it comes to the kitchen, I am simply dangerous.
How were you called to serve?
I have been known to burn toast. I have slightly smoked up the kitchen using the grill on my stove. Hence, I no longer use it. I’ve spattered ketchup 20’ across a room and onto the ceiling when I dropped a shatterproof bottle onto the floor. The most recent offense was an overcooked potato in the microwave. Three phone calls could not stop the fire department from responding to the alarm.
On his way to bed that night, Robbie teasingly told me to try not to blow anything up while he was sleeping. Bob was good about the whole thing too. He tried to encourage me that it could happen to anyone. He also showed me the charred, crisp potato.
We are all grateful to God that it was only a little smoke.
Did I mention that I was not called to cook? Robbie has done most of the cooking in recent years. Usually when I mention cooking, the response ranges from disappointment to sheer terror. After the potato incident, I figured they would not let me loose in the kitchen again anytime soon.
Yet even the very next day, Drew asked me why I always leaned up against the refrigerator when microwaving water for my coffee. My response was something like, “Remember last night’s potato?”
Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
1 Corinthians 12:4-7
For the body is not one member, but many. If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.
1 Corinthians 12:14-18
We are all called to serve, but we are not all called to serve in the same way. My singing is no better than my cooking, but God gave me the gift of teaching. What has he called you to do?
LIFE APPLICATION
Today’s challenge is to think about how you are serving God. Are you doing what He has called you to do, or are you chasing after something else? We are all called to serve, and we serve best when we serve as we are gifted and fitted to serve. Ask God to show you how He would use you to profit withal and to bring glory to Himself. Walk in the works that He has prepared for you!
