I was at a training recently. An opening question was, “Who is your hero?”
While the names of super heroes were tossed out, I was thinking, “Jesus is my hero.” Then I sat wondering what the response would have been if I had yelled that out.
Would folks have cheered for Jesus? I don’t know. Jesus is not always welcomed these days.
Think about the irony of the discussions about manger scenes at Christmas. Think about the Christmas celebrations that have been renamed to holiday celebrations. We are supposed to be celebrating the birth of our Savior. If you aren’t going to celebrate that, what exactly are you celebrating?
Think about the irony of opening government meetings with prayer, but fighting over the display of the Ten Commandments.
Could it be that our society has reduced God to tradition, and now we are just left arguing over tradition?
If we are arguing over tradition and not convictions, we really are in trouble.
You might be thinking, “What is the difference?”
Folks will take a stand for their convictions. Folks will not necessarily take a stand for their traditions. Folks are willing to die for their convictions. Most folks aren’t willing to die for their traditions. Unlike convictions, traditions are negotiable.
The real issue is that we, as a society, have dethroned God. By making God and the things of God hush-hush in public, we pass along the wrong message to our children.
When you think of God, do you think of God in terms of real consequences?
Consider the real consequences Moses faced because he disobeyed.
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink. And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him. And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock? And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also. And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.
Numbers 20:7-12
How big a deal would it have been in your eyes that Moses smote the rock twice instead of speaking to it? Obedience is a big deal to God. We need to put Him back on His throne.
LIFE APPLICATION
We need to remember that Jesus is Lord of Lords and King of Kings. We need to elevate Him to that position in our minds and hearts – both as a society and personally.
Ask yourself today – and be honest, “Do you fear God?” Is what God says more important to you than what a person says? When you are making a decision are you seeking God’s will or are you seeking to please someone else – maybe even yourself?
I urge you to put God back on His throne today.
